A recent survey by a leading dating app reveals how modern Indian men are redefining dating norms. Conducted among 12,000 male users from Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities, the study showcases a shift toward emotional openness, vulnerability, and a focus on equality in relationships.
Openness
The survey, held in early November, included participants aged 20 to 35, ranging from students to working professionals. A significant takeaway is that men are prioritising emotional well-being over societal expectations to appear detached. Many respondents reported discussing issues such as past relationship mistakes and mental health struggles, early in their interactions. This transparency leads to healthier connections.
Vulnerability
Take Romal, a 36-year-old software engineer from Bengaluru. He shared, “I used to think that showing vulnerability was a sign of weakness. But now, I realize that being open about my struggles helps build stronger, more genuine relationships.” Romal’s experience is echoed by others. In fact, 26% of survey respondents admitted they find it easier to share personal challenges through digital communication. This trend of openness allows men to discuss anxieties and family matters more freely within relationships.
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is another highlight, with 60% of men emphasising the importance of mental health and self-care. Many now approach relationships with a focus on self-improvement, rejecting outdated notions of masculinity. For instance, Kishore, a 29-year-old marketing professional from Delhi, mentioned, “I’ve started prioritising my mental health and self-care. It’s not just about finding a partner but also about being the best version of myself.”
Gender roles
Equality in relationships is gaining traction, with 37% of respondents advocating mutual independence. Men are increasingly comfortable sharing financial responsibilities and supporting partners who earn more, reflecting a progressive attitude toward gender roles. Aman, a 32-year-old entrepreneur from Mumbai, shared, “My partner and I split our expenses equally, and I fully support her career ambitions.”
Boundaries
Finally, setting boundaries is becoming more common. Nearly 30% of respondents shared that they establish limits around personal time and exclusivity, aiming for balanced and sustainable relationships.
As dating attitudes and habits change, so do the tools a person uses to get dates. This focus on self-improvement over traditional masculinity may require dating platforms in India to change their focus to maintain success.
